How I Met Your Mother gets a nod
Um, finally! Of course, it wasn't the best season ever, but I'll take it. It won't win of course-that'll go to 30 Rock again (and well deserved). But it's a nice thought.
Jeremy Piven doesn't
Every year, that douche who tips waitresses with DVD sets of his show gets up on stage and kisses his statuette and raises it up high, and every year my blood boils. Hooray for the Academy finally realizing that his repetitive performance isn't all that funny, and go NPH!
"The Incident" gets some love
As brilliant as Mad Men is, I'm crossing my fingers that their vote will be split 4 ways and the majority will go to Lost. I really, really want to see Darlton up on that stage.
Surprise! Jim Parsons and Sarah Silverman?
I don't regularly watch either of their shows, but it was cool to finally see some variety in their respective categories, and they're both immensely talented. Yeah, I'm still rooting for my 30 Rock peeps, but it's nice that they have some acceptable competition for a change. Also exciting: Jermaine Clement, Jack McBrayer, Jane Krakowski
Suck it, Boston Legal!
Contrary to my assumptions, there was no love for James Spader, nor another undeserved Best Drama nod for the sorry excuse for a series.
Jon Hamm will probably win something
Even if reigning champ Cranston bests him for Lead Actor in a Drama, Guest Actor in a Comedy is his to lose. Yeah, Steve Martin and Alan Alda are stiff competition, but I kinda feel they both a) sadly overacted and b) will totally split the respected old legend vote.
So unfortunately, that's where my approval ends. Here's how they totally fucked up, starting with the biggest offense:
Elizabeth Mitchell was snubbed. Again.
There is no better actress on television today, in any way, shape, or form. Honestly, if Meryl Streep or Katherine Hepburn were currently on TV, I'd still say Mitchell beats them. Does the Academy actually watch LOST, or do they just occasionally vote for it because all the kids say it's so darn cool?
Battlestar Galactica was snubbed. AGAIN.
I'd almost accept ignoring Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos, because neither actor had their strongest season here-although it still sucks. But when the number of nominations in the Best Drama category is expanded to seven and they still can't make room for one of television's best shows ever, I start to question their intelligence (like, is House still relevant? Do they actually think this season of Big Love was better?). And furthermore, to overindulge Matthew Weiner with writing nods but ignore Michael Angeli was just a weird shock. Dude's been nominated for lesser episodes than "Blood on the Scales", and only "Meditations in an Emergency" is even on the same level.
We already know who's winning the big awards
I like to at least pretend like the Emmys can surprise me. But with Mad Men and 30 Rock each getting 4/5 writing nods, um, I think we know where this is going. Hopefully Tracy Morgan does something shocking, because as much as I love both shows, the repetition is getting boring.
Actually, just repetition in general.
Rather than say, recognize January Jones' brilliance or god forbid, give some props to The CW, I'm pretty sure Emmy has this strategy for selecting nominees: "Hey guys, who'd we nominate last year? That show still on? Alright, cool, we're done. Hey, look, Boston Legal reruns! Oh, that Shatner-gets me every time!". I mean, seriously! The Shat ain't shit, Mariska Hargitay never changes, Charlie Sheen peaked in Ferris Bueller, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss doesn't need props just for playing someone other than Elaine, and how many fucking nominations does Tony Shaloub need? Yeah, the same shows and the same actors are around every goddamn year, but sometimes Katherine Heigl (much as I loathe her) does a better job than Sandra Oh, and vice versa. And I swear to god, I will puke if I see those 50 people get onstage again for The Amazing Race. (Top Chef ftw! And go Tom & Padma!)*
*July rant ends.
And now, with the knowledge of who won Creative Arts Emmys (yay Dr. Horrible! boo to all guest actors other than Tina Fey!), here's what I think will happen tomorrow, complete with should/will wins based on actual nominees:
Supporting Actress-Comedy:
Should win: Jane Krakowski, for embodying a character who has a grudge against Raven-Symone.
Will win: Kristen Wiig, because she owns SNL now that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey aren't there to be funnier.
Supporting Actor-Comedy:
Should and will win: NPH!!!!! Neil Patrick Harris is long overdue for this. Sunday night will be legen-wait for it-dary!
Actress-Comedy:
Should win: Tina Fey, aka funniest woman alive.
Will win: Toni Collette, because they already gave Tina the guest actress award plus Emmys <3>
Actor-Comedy:
Should win: Jim Parsons, because in all 5 minutes of The Big Bang Theory that I've seen proved he's refreshingly awesome (also, I may or may not want retrospective props to him for Garden State).
Will win: Tony Shaloub, because his shitshow is finally fucking over.
Writing-Comedy:
Should & will win: Jack Burditt & Robert Carlock "Kidney Now!" 30 Rock, because Jack Burditt is the funniest writer currently working for television, as evidenced by making Cyndi Lauper declare "I'm one of the drunk ones!" amongst other things.
Fucking cannot win or I'll cry: Matt Hubbard "Reunion" 30 Rock, because that was MY FUCKING SPEC and dare I say, I did it better (or at the very least, had a better high school Jenna joke).
Best Comedy:
Should & will win: 30 Rock, because it actually is the best, plus 4 out of 5 writing nods makes it a lock.
Supporting Actress-Drama:
Should & will win: Who the fuck cares? None of them are Elizabeth Mitchell, therefore none are the best actress on television. (but if I had to pick out of nominees, I'm REALLY rooting for Chandra Wilson and wary of reigning champ Diane Weist.)
Supporting Actor-Drama:
Should win: Michael Emerson, because he's the only Lost actor nominated and Lost > everything else. (but really, where is Terry O'Quinn here?)
Will win: William Shatner, because I'm pretty sure the Emmys want me to scream and cry.
Actress-Drama:
Should win: Elisabeth Moss, because excluding anything that happened on Lost, her speech to Pete in the season finale was the most incredible thing a woman did on television this year.
Will win: Kyra Sedgwick, because she hasn't won yet and keeps getting nominated.
Actor-Drama:
Should and will win: Jon Hamm, because he's incredible and his loss in Guest Actor in a Comedy tells me Emmy was saving his glory for here.
Writing-Drama:
Should win: Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse "The Incident" Lost, because I dare you to find a more incredible piece of television this year.
Will win: Matthew Weiner, for any number of his 4 nominations. What a whore.
Best Drama:
Should win: Lost, because the sci-fi nerd in me is angry that BSG was ignored here again, and, oh yeah, it's fucking awesome. But since it's really more imperative that Lost win next year, I know that...
Will win: Mad Men, because it's very cool and like 30 Rock's stranglehold on comedy, has 4 out of 5 writing nods in its genre. Plus, season 2 > season 1, and season 1 won the big award last year. It's only logical.
So, that's what I'm happy or angry about, as well as expecting. Enjoy the Emmys tomorrow night (or as I like to call them, Angry Christmas), and when I regain my voice post-screaming, I'll bunker down with commentary on that crap.
